PUTRAJAYA: Students don't have to wear uniforms to school and can opt to wear their own clothes, says Datuk Dr Radzi Jidin.
The Education Minister said school uniforms are not mandatory for students and pupils, but emphasised that the choice of clothing must be appropriate.
“By the time we reopen schools, parents might notice that their children can’t fit into their uniforms.
“So, we are allowing them to wear neat and appropriate clothes if they can’t fit into their uniforms. Because our aim is to bring them back to school and not to punish them (for not wearing uniform),” he said during the announcement of the new standard operating procedures (SOPs) for schools on Sunday (Sept 12).
Ahead of the reopening on Oct 3 in stages, Dr Radzi said while it is easy for the ministry to continue to keep schools closed, decisions cannot be made based on sentiments.
“There are almost five million students in the country who come from various socioeconomic backgrounds. What’s important is to bring these students back to school because they have been away for too long,” he added.
